Turnagain Avalanche Advisory

View an older advisory:

May 28th, 2008
Good morning this is Carl Skustad with the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center on Wednesday, May 28th at 8am. This notice will serve as a general backcountry update.

All Areas of the Chugach National Forest are now closed to snowmachining. This includes Turnagain Pass and the lands above Whittier. Thanks for another great season.

Spring Avalanche Tips:

Stay off steep terrain in the warmer afternoon hours if direct sun, warm temps, or rain is present.

Many high alpine areas of the Chugach and Kenai mountains are still holding cold snow. This means nice traveling, but it also means many of these areas have not seen a spring avalanche cycle yet.

Stay out from under glide cracks. Many glide cracks have ripped loose in the last few days, but many more have yet to release.

As the Avalanche Center wraps up the season we would like to thank all of our supporters and observers. The avalanche center is only as successfull as you the recreating public provide input and utilize advisories. Thanks to Alyeska Resort, AKDOT, AKRR, Chugach Powder Guides, and countless observers. Thanks to the Friends of the CNFAIC, the Freinds Group is a 501 C3 non-profit group that helps support the Avalanche Center. Thanks to all the sponsers of the Telmark Festival that made it such a successfull fundraiser for the group. We look forward to another great winter in 2008-2009. We'll see you at the Oxygen and Octane Show this fall October 17-19 in Anchorage.
